How Women’s and Men’s Fashion Differs

In many ways, we’re very fortunate as women. Ladies’ fashion is especially varied when compared to that of men’s. While this might seem like a vast generalisation, men’s fashion could potentially be described as limited. Women’s outfits can differ immensely, yet men’s casual wear and suits – for instance – are relatively similar in a lot of ways. Sure, the fit, colour and pattern can be changed, but just think of how many options a woman has in terms of the clothes she can wear. She can choose from high and long, flowing dresses, sleeved and sleeveless, skirts, tops and pants, not to mention the increased number of accessories that are available.

Traditionally, women have been more concerned about their appearance; we like to go out and shop for new clothes, engage in retail therapy and make ourselves look pretty. There’s really nothing quite like finding that perfect new top or skirt at a bargain price – it definitely gets the adrenalin pumping!

It’s fair to say that men, on the other hand, tend to make less of an effort with their appearance. A day out shopping isn’t exactly what most men would choose to do with their days off – they’d probably prefer to be on the golf course, for instance. That said, this stereotype is changing as many modern men often take as much time to get ready as some women! However, the fact is that women’s fashion is a bigger industry and the emphasis that is placed by women on our appearance is greater, generally speaking.

In our opinion – and we hope yours too – this is something to be celebrated! As women, we have so many different ways that we can choose to express ourselves through our appearance. A fashionable woman is able to mix and match her clothing, making certain items appear different depending on the overall outfit and the context. A piece can appear totally different when matched with certain clothes and this is one of the most exciting elements of designer fashion.

At Bue Boutique, we’ve always embraced this, and we aim to make it simple for our customers to match different clothing pieces and create new outfits. In fact, each of the items we stock is handpicked because we feel it complements our existing range. You’re not going to find mass produced clothing on the Bue Boutique website; rather you’ll find a eclectic range with a point of difference. The fact that we handpick our items means that you can find that unique look and mix and match pieces quite easily, which is one of the great things about shopping to begin with!

What do our readers think? Is women’s fashion considerably more varied than is men’s? What makes shopping for clothing so exciting?

Designer Fashion and Underground Labels

Traditionally, the latest fashions – whether it be for men or women – are not always supposed to appeal to the general public straight away. While the average person is likely to see some wonderful pieces that they love at fashion shows, a great deal of the clothing is experimental and might be too edgy for actual use in public. Rather, fashion trends seem to establish themselves over time as they require a shift in the public perception of what looks good and what is considered trendy.

We’ve all had those ‘What was I thinking?’ moments when Lui-Hon_Prism-of-lightlooking at photos of ourselves from years before (let’s all agree to forget the 90’s) yet we felt comfortable, sexy and chic at the time. Yes it’s true; baggy jeans and outrageously high platform shoes were once all the rage.

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion week, which actually kicked off in New York this week, has featured some very interesting pieces that the average woman would probably consider unflattering or unappealing. Designer fashion today is similar in that it experiments with different looks and tends to avoid staying within accepted current norms, and it difficult to say whether there’s any pattern to that determines which trends catch on.

Surely, a lot of it has to do with brand name and label. It might be the case that established, revered designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, Armani Gucci carry a lot of the responsibility in determining the direction that fashion trends take. Yet more unknown, underground labels also play a part in this, and the innovative and creative pieces they design can rival those of more commercial brands.

Coming in a variety of forms, underground, alternative fashion has actually given way to many clothing trends. Examples include vintage/retro look, punk fashion and Japanese street fashion, which has migrated to the west. While these styles might not be considered designer, they and others have had a profound effect on the fashion industry in the past few decades, indicating the importance of underground brands.

At Bue Boutique, we believe that some of the most beautiful, trendy clothing comes from the lesser-known designers. Our store stocks elegant pieces from many designers you’re not likely to have heard of, as well as including more commercial brand names.

We stock a gorgeous collection of clothing and accessories, all hand-picked for their original and unique look. Here on our blog  you’ll learn about our products, the designers we admire, special promos and other information about Bue! If you’ve visited our website, you’d know that Lui Hon is one of the labels we are very proud to house. Our seasonal stock list includes a number of his designs and we love the draping, flowing nature of his clothing.

Lui-Hon_Prism-of-light_24largeThe Malaysian-born designer, who actually studied at RMIT University, first attracted attention on the reality television program Project Runway Australia, where he made it to the final four contestants.

Today, more than 5 years on, Lui Hon has established a name for himself in the Australian fashion industry and his pieces are widely commended and praised for their originality. These delicate and technically flawless, yet somehow fierce designs have been described as ‘texturally intriguing’ and ‘concealing surprising discoveries’.

Interestingly, Hon is inspired by his own understanding of the female condition, and the great inner strength and courage women in his life have exhibited. His view is that making the contrast is the key to display femineity.

‘The beauty of the feminine is when it combines with the strength. I want my garments to bring, inject, or perhaps pull out the masculine in the woman,’ he explains.

Being both strong and soft simultaneously, Hon’s clothing is striking and unique in its design. Having a fondness of wool – 80 per cent of the range features it – he also has a penchant for colourless pieces.

‘I love to use wool…because (it has) a…mouldable character. It’s a natural, raw, breathable material,’ Hon says.

Bue Boutique stocks various products from Lui Hon’s range and we invite you to check out his designs on our website. For more information about our products or to make an enquiry, click through to the ‘Contact Us’ page on our website.
